A dental crown — also called a tooth cap — is a custom-made restoration that fits over the entire visible surface of a tooth, from the gumline up. Unlike a filling which fills a cavity within the tooth, a crown encases the whole tooth — restoring its shape, size, strength and appearance. Dental crowns Sydney are one of the most common and versatile restorations in dentistry.
At Paynless Dental, crowns are fabricated by trusted Sydney dental laboratories using high-quality materials — porcelain, zirconia, PFM and gold alloy — selected based on the tooth’s position, bite forces, aesthetic requirements and budget. Written itemised quote provided at consultation before any preparation.
Your dentist recommends the most conservative option appropriate for your specific tooth.
The right material depends on the tooth’s position, bite forces, aesthetic requirements and your budget. Your dentist will recommend the most appropriate option at consultation.
| Material | Appearance | Strength | Best For | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zirconia | Tooth-coloured · excellent aesthetics · very white base | Exceptional — strongest ceramic · withstands heavy bite forces | Back teeth (molars/premolars) · grinders · most popular choice | 15+ years |
| Porcelain (e-max) | Superior translucency and natural depth · best aesthetics | Good for front teeth · less suitable for heavy bite forces | Front teeth · high aesthetic demand · smile zone | 10–15 years |
| PFM | Tooth-coloured · metal substructure may show at gumline | Very strong — metal core · well-proven material | Back teeth · long-span bridges · critical strength cases | 10–15 years |
| Gold Alloy | Gold coloured — not tooth-coloured | Excellent — most durable · gentle on opposing teeth | Second molars · heavy grinders · longevity over aesthetics | 15–20+ years |
| Porcelain-on-Zirconia | Premium aesthetics with zirconia strength | Strong — zirconia core with porcelain overlay | Front teeth requiring maximum aesthetics and strength | 10–15 years |
Root canal treatment removes the pulp (nerve and blood supply), making the tooth brittle and prone to fracture. A dental crown is strongly recommended after RCT on any molar or premolar. Without a crown, the treated tooth has a high risk of vertical fracture — often requiring extraction.
A dental implant replaces the tooth root — a crown then replaces the visible tooth above the gum. The implant crown attaches to the implant via an abutment — screwed or cemented. Zirconia is most common for implant crowns due to its strength and aesthetics. Requires the implant to be fully integrated (3–6 months after placement).
Implant crown from $1,500–$2,200
A dental bridge replaces a missing tooth using crowns on the adjacent teeth as anchors (abutments). The crowns support the false tooth (pontic) spanning the gap. Requires preparation of the adjacent teeth. PFM or zirconia bridges are most common. Fixed in place — not removable like a partial denture.
A tooth fractured beyond what a filling or onlay can restore requires a crown to cap and protect the remaining structure. The crown prevents further fracture and restores full function and appearance. Same-week appointments available for broken teeth — call (02) 8677 9094.
X-rays taken. The tooth is examined and the need for a crown confirmed. The tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic — shaped to accept the crown. A digital scan or impression is taken and sent to the laboratory. A temporary crown is placed to protect the prepared tooth.
Duration: 60–90 minutes
Your crown is custom-fabricated by a trusted Sydney dental laboratory using the selected material. The temporary crown remains in place — it functions normally but should be treated gently. Avoid sticky or very hard foods on the temporary crown.
No visit required during this period
The temporary crown is removed. The permanent crown is tried in and checked for fit, bite and appearance. Minor adjustments made as needed. The crown is permanently cemented. Care instructions provided. Full function restored immediately.
Duration: 45–60 minutes

For back teeth (molars and premolars) — yes, strongly recommended. Root canal treatment removes the nerve and blood supply, making the tooth brittle and prone to vertical fracture. A crown protects against this. Without a crown, the treated tooth has a high fracture risk which often results in extraction. Front teeth after RCT are assessed case by case. Discuss timing with your dentist. Call (02) 8677 9094.
Typically 2 appointments over 1–2 weeks. Visit 1: assessment, tooth preparation under local anaesthetic, digital scan and temporary crown placement (60–90 minutes). The laboratory fabricates your permanent crown over 1–2 weeks. Visit 2: permanent crown fitting and cementation (45–60 minutes). You leave with a fully functional crown at the end of Visit 2.
For back teeth — zirconia is generally preferred: strongest ceramic, excellent aesthetics and highly durable (15+ years). For front teeth in the smile zone where translucency and natural depth are critical — e-max porcelain or porcelain-on-zirconia gives the most natural result. Gold alloy remains the most durable option for heavy grinders or second molars where aesthetics are secondary. Your dentist will recommend the most appropriate material at consultation. Call (02) 8677 9094.
A well-maintained crown typically lasts 10–15+ years. Longevity depends on material (gold is most durable at 15–20+ years), bite forces, oral hygiene, whether you grind your teeth and whether you attend regular 6-monthly check-ups. The most common reason for premature crown failure is decay developing at the margin — preventable with consistent brushing and flossing at the gumline.
Most private health fund major dental extras policies cover dental crowns — rebate amounts vary significantly by fund and level of cover. Paynless Dental processes HICAPS on-the-spot claims at all clinics. A written itemised quote with ADA item codes before treatment lets you check your specific entitlements with your fund. Note: CDBS does not cover crowns. Call (02) 8677 9094.

Treat the temporary crown gently — it is not as strong as the permanent crown. Avoid sticky or very hard foods on the temporary side. Continue brushing and flossing normally. If the temporary crown comes off, call the clinic immediately — do not leave the prepared tooth unprotected. Contact Paynless Dental on (02) 8677 9094.
A crown is strongly recommended after root canal on back teeth. Paynless Dental provides both at the same clinic. From $900+.
An implant crown completes a dental implant treatment — replacing the visible tooth above the gum. From $1,500–$2,200.
Dental bridges use crowns on adjacent teeth to replace a missing tooth. A common alternative or complement to implants. From $1,800.
A severely broken tooth beyond what a filling can restore usually requires a crown. Same-week appointments available.
